2-Deoxy-Glucose and the Treatment of Prostate Cancer

2-Deoxy-Glucose is a natural substance that has been studied along with metformin as a treatment for prostate cancer. Apparently, the combination of the two agents together has actions against tumors and blocks the proliferation of various kinds of cancer cells.

One research article (1) looked into the combined use of metformin and 2-deoxy-glucose in the treatment of prostate cancer. They found that it required the use of both agents to effectively kill the prostate cancer cells and that either agent alone had no effect on cancer. The combination of metformin and 2-deoxy-glucose was able to cause programmed cell death in prostate cancer cells in an in vitro study of the two agents against prostate cancer cells.

More studies need to be done on animal or human models to see whether these two agents could be effective in treating prostate cancer in humans with prostate cancer.
