Apigenin Has Flavonoid Properties That Can Help Treat Cancer

Apigenin is a dietary nutrient of the flavonoid type.  Several research studies have been used on apigenin as potential cancer-fighting agent (1).

While it has already been found to be effective in treating cancer, researchers didn’t know exactly how it was able to do this.  In one study (1), it was found that apigenin blocked HIF-1, which is also known as hypoxia-inducible factor 1. It was also found to prevent the growth of new blood vessels in human cancers of the ovaries.

Because cancers only grow under conditions where new blood vessels can be formed to feed the tumor, any agent that blocks the formation of new blood vessels can limit the growth of cancer.  It appears that this is how apigenin works to fight cancer.  Studies have been done in animal models; however, more research needs to be done in humans with cancer to see if the herbal remedy could be used to treat cancers in humans.
