3-bromo-pyruvate is a chemical that is currently being studied as a treatment for cancer. Researchers are using this agent to see if it can effectively kill cancer cells.
One research article (1), looked into the Warburg effect in cancer cells, which involves a high glucose metabolism into lactic acid, which is a phenomenon that occurs in various types of cancer cells. Apparently, 3-Bromo-pyruvate has an effectiveness against the Warburg effect so that it could be an effective treatment against cancer. 3-Bromo-pyruvate was used in one cancer patient who was able to get better after receiving the agent.
As this was just a case report, more research needs to be done to see whether or not 3-Bromo-pyruvate can be effective in a larger clinical trial.
