3-bromopyruvate or 3 BP is a chemical that has been evaluated for the treatment of cancer. 3 BP is believed to fight cancer because it acts on glycolysis, which is what cancer cells use to generate cellular energy.
One research study (1) discussed 3 BP and its effectiveness against cancer cells. It noted that 3 BP was able to inhibit hexokinase, thereby blocking the cellular metabolism in cancer cells so that there is programmed cell death or apoptosis of the cancer cells.
It noted that, by blocking hexokinase, 3 BP was able to interfere with cancer cell metabolism so that the cancer cells die. Few studies have been done on animals and humans so more research needs to be done to see if 3 BP can kill cancer in actual human subjects.
