2 Deoxy glucose or 2 DG is a glucose molecule in which the 2 hydroxyl group has been replaced by a hydrogen atom so that it can’t undergo glycolysis. It is currently being studied for the treatment of prostate cancer.
One research article (1) discussed 2DG and its ability to kill cancer cells. It noted that the addition of 2 DG and metformin was able to block the glycolysis and mitochondrial respiration in prostate cancer cells. This leads to significant loss of ATP.
The article also noted that the combination of these two substances was much more dangerous for prostate cancer cells that treating the patient with either substance alone. As this was an in vitro study (meaning that it was done in a culture medium and not on living things), more research needs to be done to see if 2 DG and metformin could kill cancer cells in animal or human subjects.
