Obesity is associated with an increased risk of cancer. Some cancers associated with obesity include gallbladder cancer, thyroid cancer, kidney cancer, cancer of the endometrium breast cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and esophageal cancer.
One study out of the National Cancer Institute (1) looked at obesity and its ability to cause cancer. It discussed data from the SEER study, which involved 34,000 cases of cancer in men and more than 50,000 cases of cancer in women.About 7 percent of the cancers in these individuals were due to obesity.
It is estimated that if the current trends persist, there will be around 500,000 additional cases of cancer in the United States by the year 2030.
