Processed Meat and the Risk of Cancer

Processed meat included foods like bologna, ham, sausage, hot dogs, bacon, and other types of cold cuts. They are currently being studied as to their risk of causing cancer.

One article (1) looked into the risk of getting certain types of cancer and eating processed meats. It noted that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has considered processed meat to be a carcinogen, which is any substance that increases the risk of getting cancer. Red meat has also been classified as causing cancer. The article referred to more than eight hundred research articles as to the risk of getting cancer when a person eats processed meats.

They found that colorectal cancer risk was increased by 18 percent when people ate processed foods when compared to those that didn’t eat processed meats. They also found that eating red meat increased the chances of getting prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer.
