Radiotherapy is one of the many treatments for breast cancer. Its use is controversial as it sometimes seems to be effective, yet at other times, it isn’t as effective in treating breast cancer.
One research study (1) looked at radiotherapy in the management of breast cancer. They noted that earlier studies have shown that radiotherapy decreased the chances of a localized relapse of breast cancer. Unfortunately, the previous studies indicated that, while radiotherapy helped, it didn’t help breast cancer patients survive longer.
The article determined that the patients who died after receiving radiotherapy actually died of heart disease and not from cancer so that radiotherapy should continue to be given in the treatment of breast cancer patients.
