Surgery for Cancer

Surgery is often one of the first things the cancer doctors treating cancer patients. There are different kinds of surgery, depending on the location of cancer, the type of cancer, and the goals of the surgery.

One article (1) discussed surgery for cancer. It noted that surgery involves the removal of cancer and the tissues around cancer. It noted that surgery is one of the oldest and most common ways to treat solid tumors that are cancerous.

The article also listed the different types of surgery for cancer, including diagnostic surgery (which helps define the kind of surgery a patient has, primary surgery (that removes the tumor and tissues around the tumor), debulking surgery (when it is not possible to remove the entire tumor), palliation surgery (to reduce side effects), reconstructive surgery (that helps restore the appearance of the body after primary surgery), preventative surgery which reduces the chances of getting cancer in the first place, and minimally invasive surgery (such as laparoscopic surgery cryosurgery, laser surgery, and endoscopic surgery).
